I’m a little bit late in giving my salute to Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Malaysian Tourism Minister as the ‘Jackass of the month’, following the ranks from Blogjunkie, Kris Khaira, IT-Sideways and the rest of the blogosphere.

National Chinese daily Sin Chew Daily reported that the minister as saying:

“All bloggers are liars, they cheat people using all kinds of methods. From my understanding, out of 10,000 unemployed bloggers, 8,000 are women.

He said that bloggers spread rumours, disrupt social harmony and many bloggers are slanderous and are cheating people with their blogs.

“All bloggers are not in favour of national unity. Our country has been successful because we are very tolerant with each other, if not, there will be civil war, the Malays will kill the Chinese, the Chinese will take revenge and kill the Malays, and the Indian will kill everyone.

He urged the rakyat not to simply trust bloggers, and gamble our future away because the achievement we gain in the 50 years of independence is not an easy task.

This is obviously the case of someone who doesn’t quite understands the medium. This is not the first time bloggers were accused of being liars by an government official.

His general idea of a blogger is of an unemployed women who starts out the day by thinking of what lies she could write about on her blog. She then makes sure that the lies will cause social unrest among the readers. This will then leads to anarchy and people will topple the government and end up making her the queen of the universe. (wtf? yes my point exactly)

However recently I did post a result of a survey says that most Malaysian bloggers are women. Not sure how accurate the survey is, as I only personally know a few women who blogs seriously, not counting those who blogs on social networks such as Friendster, LiveJournal or MySpace.

Even-though I have to agree that I had stumble upon some blogs that bends the truth (read: lies) in order to spread their propaganda, but those are just a small handful of them. To generalize bloggers as being liars is just wrong.

No wonder Malaysian bloggers are up in arms again.

If bloggers are liars, slanderous and are cheating people, then what is there to differentiate us the bloggers then the current mainstream mass media? Sure some blogger lies, but so do most mass media.

We live in an information age, where information are easy to manipulate as it is easy to distribute. Similar to news you find in news papers or TV, one should always use common sense when reading materials found on the internet. Double check with different sources if needed. I pretty sure the general public are aware of this.

Knowing how the news papers are lately, the Tourism Minister might have been misquoted. Which is why I’ve been suggesting the idea of an official government blog. I would be great as they could add in the current conversation within the blogosphere. There are blogs by politicians from the opposition parties but I haven’t seen any blog from the current ruling parties.

Well, it is all depends on the bloggers as well. sometimes, what we wrote is for the sake of informing others how not to get cheated.

As for me, I had a cat blog which I wrote something about an irresponsible breeder had practice unethically and at last I got fired by a handful of people and even threatened me that I may get sued. I had made a general statement without mentioning any names but somehow these people perasan sendiri lah. as the malay proverb says, “Siapa Makan Cili, Dia Rasa Pedas lah”

as long as some of us bloggers are doing for the community, I think we have the right to speak up but of course becareful what you say. You may not want another Adnan fellow, don’t we.

The Minister of Propoganda (sounds better than “Mis-Information”)is a good chap. He will be even more hardworking when the General Election is announced. Watch him perform then. Don’t be hard on him - you don’t really know why he said that. He could have had a horrible childhood, but then he might have had a really great one. As I said you don’t know anything about this idiot’s background.

But he supports PM and so he is okay. I ‘m not sure whether he has eaten at that nasi kandar restaurant in Perth, near where the PM is alleged to have purchased a multi-million home (all lies, I know. PM will never abandon Malaysia). But with the name like that he might have had indigestion at a KL eatery but ,hey, who knows!
