YouTube to start revenue-sharing

BBC reports that YouTube founder Chad Hurley had confirmed that his team is working on a revenue-sharing mechanism for YouTube’s users. The feature will be rolled out in the coming months.

Ads will be embedded in the beginning of a YouTube video. Chad ensure that audience of the YouTube website will not have to up up with overly long “pre-roll” adverts. Each embedded video will run about 3 or so seconds.

YouTube then will split the revenue it gain from the embedded ads with the owner of the content video. This will put YouTube head on against it’s rival Revver which had already has a revenue-sharing system in place for it’s users.

The first thing I thought of when Google buying YouTube was that Google wanted to put ‘Adsense’ on videos. If this were done right it will be awesome.

There is no details yet of how they are going to do it. Some questions are: -

  1. Could I opt out from this and not include ads on my video?
  2. Do I have controls of the ads that will be displayed on my video?
  3. Could I select certain types of ads to not be display?
  4. Will the ads be contextual based? (YouTube are currently working on a system that detects copyrighted video materials, could YouTube ’see’ your video and select ads accordingly?)

The details are not that clear about this service yet. Placing ads on a YouTube video is a great move in the advertiser’s point of view. A popular YouTube video not only will be at the YouTube’s website but all over the web, with people embedding it to their blogs, and sites.

Myspace.com has banned all reverences to revver.com in user profiles because of the ads that are in the video. I wonder what the back lash would be if myspace bans youtube because they contain ads.

Youtube will also need to strep up their API if they plan on doing this. The revver api is great, while youtubes is really lack luster.
