Computer Wizardry, Esoteric Spirituality, and Mind-altering Substances

Times has declare the winner of the next gen console war, at least for this Christmas season. The winner is non other then the Nintendo Wii. Looks like while Microsoft’s Xbox360, although had taken an early advantage, busy trying to push downloaded content to people’s living rooms and PS3 trying hard to “1up” in everything Xbox does packing it’s blu-ray high-tech specs, both console fails to won people’s heart.
Here, came the underdog in the console gaming world with a far less technically sophisticated hardware specs manage to take the crown. The general review, what people are saying about Nintendo Wii system is that it’s more “fun” to play. In the end of the they, that is what a game console should be, “fun”.
Sony must be worried about the future of it’s futuristic gaming console. Sony will have to depends on a few ‘killer’ games, from its strong allies in order to survive. I’m talking about Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Turismo.
In Asia, or here in Malaysia however, Sony PlayStation has always been in the first place. You rarely will meet anybody here with an Xbox. The reason boils down to piracy and the amount of pirated games for that console It is actually far easier to get pirated games here then to find original games. PlayStation here are sold with mod chip already installed. The little modification needed to play copied ‘backup’ games.
For these next gen console however, it might be a little bit tricky. I think it might takes awhile for pirates to pick-up these console.
First of, all of these console could connect to the Internet. Sure you could play them offline, but it wont be as fun and sooner or later you would want to connect them to the Internet. These consoles now, unlike their predecessors, technically could ‘call home’. It could report on what version the firmware is running, or if there are any modification done.
They could block contents or access to these consoles if there are modification on the firmware and such. So it gets tricky for pirates or modders. Unless if there is an on/off switch for the mod chip. That could work.
As for PS3, they are using the Blu-ray technology on their game media disk. To pirate a PS3, they need to have Blu-ray writers and access to Blu-ray disks. If they manage to get those, I’m pretty sure the price of pirated games would be really high. I’m guessing around RM 50 to RM 60, as oppose the current price of PS2 games right now, which is around RM5 to RM8.
Add a few bucks and you could have the original games, support original games.
I’m not here to promotes piracy, just stating the obvious for those in the culture where piracy is a normal thing. Those who are waiting to get their hands on a PS3, with mod chip and a bunch of pirated games, (I know a lot of you are), will have to wait longer.
If you have any other information about this, you are welcome to prove me wrong.
