Computer Wizardry, Esoteric Spirituality, and Mind-altering Substances

Those Japanese folks who lineup overnight at their local electronic stores is probably right now enjoying themselves with their brand new Sony PlayStation 3 while I’m writing this. PS3 is already on sale in Japan. That with Wii just around the conner, gaming console fanboys are all up in arms defending their console as the best ‘next gen’ gaming console ever.
Looking back, my journey to the gaming world starts on my 8th birthday when my dad bought me a Micro Genius, the Nintendo Famicom, stands for ‘family computer’ don’t ask, you know how it is when Japanese start naming stuff. The machine which is part of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). I still remember I use to play Contra and 1942 two player mode with my dad even when it’s on a school night and way past my bed time. Somehow I think my 8th birthday was just the excuse needed for my dad to get himself a NES Famicom system.
After that came the Super NES, SEGA Mega Drive and the PlayStation, PlayStation2. You could say that I grow up playing electronic games.
Enough nostalgia, lets talk about the future. Three mega gaming console are battling it out for market share and the rights to brag about who has the best machine. Which machine will get my money? It will probably be the PS3. I know I’ve been talking about how cool the Nintendo Wii is, but the fact is that all games that I would want to play will be on PS3.
As a long time fan of the Square’s Final Fantasy games a PS3 is a must have if I got enough for one system. If I got enough for two system then I’ll consider the Nintendo Wii.
PS3 has an awesome hardware spec that some even says it’s far to advance. It’s SIXAXIS controller sounds pretty cool too. It has the ability to detect motion in the full six degrees. These together with Wiimote the Wii controller, expect to see gamers to have strong biceps in the future.
The trend I’m seeing is that these next gen gaming console are trying to become a ‘media center’ device, taking control of your living room. All three machines can play other media such as video, music or photos, they can even surf the web. Apple might just be too late in introducing it’s iTV product.
My hope that all this ‘other feature’ do not distract the true nature of the machine, which is gaming. Can’t wait to get my hand behind one of those PS3 SIXAXIS controller.
