Lonelygirl on YouTube

So it is all over the Internet, the blogosphere and even mainstream news papers. Creators of the phenomenon YouTube video diary of a teenage girl named ‘Bree’ has confessed. Bree is fiction and not real. For those who is not sure what this LonelyGirl15 being a phenomenon all about, here is a recap.

From the interview, the creators say they are not pimping a Hollywood film or anything evil like that. They just wanted to tell a really compelling story. Well good for them. The advancement of technology these days enables normal folks with a little bit of geeky know-how could produce something like this.

LonelyGirl15 also shows me the other side of YouTube that I haven’t seen before. I use to think YouTube is a place for *ahem* copyrighted materials, funny viral ads, and stupid videos of kids falling down from their skateboards. I would never thought that YouTube could be a medium for one to tell a compelling story.

In fact LonelyGirl15 made me sign up for a YouTube account just so that I could subscribe to Bree and Daniel’s channel. This was the original plan of YouTube all along. To have people creating video logs and diaries and sharing it with friends through YouTube.

So am I still going to watch LonelyGirl15 even though it’s now well known as a fake, a fiction? I know movies isn’t real, I know the ninja from Ask a Ninja isn’t really a Ninja, but that doesn’t stop me from watching. Ok so the ninja might be real, in fact he might just be on his way to killing me right now if he reads this. In fact I think the whole LonelyGirl15 show is much more real that any so called reality show on television these days.

My only disappointment with the whole LonelyGirl15 show is that currently they are using YouTube, and you have to watch it on YouTube. I wish they will make it a video podcast with RSS feeds and all, so I could subscribe to it via iTunes.

Even though the creators didn’t say who Bree was, but some net savvy geeks manage to find out. Bree is played by Jessica Rose a 19 year old aspiring actress. There are legions of fans, those who love her and those who love to hate her. Who knows YouTube could actually make you famous.

Check out LonelyGirl15 on YouTube, the story is just getting interesting.

UPDATE: Jassica Rase the actor who played Bree in LonelyGirl15 video will be on the Tonight Show alongside Julia Louise-Dreyfus, Jude Law and Bob Seger. From Mashable; In many ways, it looks like this is the tipping point for YouTube - a much bigger story than the Lazy Sunday video in late 2005.
