MacBook attack video

John Gruber of Daring Fireball a well known Mac evangelist and the all protector of everything Mac, has issued an open challenge to David Maynor and Jon Ellch.

If you can hijack a brand-new MacBook out of the box, it’s yours to keep.

For those who miss the whole story, here is a recap. On the last BlackHat Conference, there were a video (watch it here or here) that showed two security researchers break into (hack) a laptop, an Apple Computer MacBook. They done so by exploiting a vulnerability in Wi-Fi drivers. What they basically want to prove that all wireless capable laptop are vulnerable to this attacks, even Apple’s portable computer, the MacBook line.

While some are pointing out that they use a third party wireless card and MacBook itself out of the box isn’t effected with this, but no one really knows for sure. The researchers never release the technical details of how they do it to the public, at least not to my knowledge.

In an effort to debunk this myth, Daring Fireball’s John Gruber will be issuing a challenge. You can read the details of the challenge on his post.

As for me, I’m actually more worry of my laptop exploding in flames the result of doggy batteries, then someone hacking in via Wi-Fi. Nevertheless I’m a long time reader of Daring Fireball, and do admire his Mac geekery.

Right on John! There’s no way they will take him up on it. It’s a completely bogus claim aimed at sensationalism and getting attention. Put the money where your mouths are Maynor and Ellch.
