Digg 3.0

Digg.com version 3.0 is up. The most noticeable change, the controls navigation is now on the left. The whole site concept still remains the same.

Just to refresh, Digg is a user driven social content website. In other words, all the contents on the site are stories links submitted by it’s users.

Users could “digg” (positive vote) on stories submitted by other users to promote it to the front page or “bury”(negative vote) on a stories to push it back, incase of spam or non-relevence stories. The “digg” and “bury” function also applies to comment on stories.

Not only that contents are being submitted by it’s users, but it seems that the whole site is being moderated by Digg users themself, (Diggers?). What Digg introduce to the world went it first launch was a user generated and user moderated website.

Digg sidebar screenshotVersion 3.0 introduces new topic areas, such as World & Business with sub topics such as Business & Finance, Politics, World News and Offbeat News. This puts Digg into Newsvine’s arena.

Other major topics are videos, entertainment, science and such. It is good to see Digg venturing outside of the technology area. Since majority of Digg users are technology enthusiast (read: “Geek”), there might be a slow start on stories submitting in the non-technology related topic areas.

You could also choose to watch or un-watch certain topic areas. This is extremely useful as Digg grow bigger, covering more topic areas. For example I wouldn’t want to watch stories on topic such as “gardening” (who knows, there might just be one day).

One topic area I think missing is “sports”.

Popular and upcoming stories are now in a tab like interface. This is good as people could easily check out the upcoming stories and “digg” it.

I like the new changes as it keeps the site looks fresh.
