Remember the days before spam? Yeah, spam sucks. Spam is annoying. The past few days my blog was attacked by a bunch of comment and trackback spam. It’s worst enough that I’ve to deal spams in my mail inbox, now spam are poping up in my blog too.

Spammers uses all sort of tricks to have a link in my comment system to whatever crap they are selling. From “nice blog” to “I agree with”.

I’ve spend this pas 2 days deleting such spam. In my outrage I’ve accidentally deleted a couple of non-spam comments. I’m sorry if your comment got delete. Spam sucks.

I do not want people to start registering in order to comment. I like to keep the comment free for people, but not spam bots. Yes spammers didn’t even spend the time to read your post. My bet there are some automated trackback pings or commenting software that are doing their dirty work.

Searching for a solution I found Akismet. It’s a Wordpress plugin that protects your blog from comment and trackback spams.

When a new comment, trackback, or pingback comes to your blog it is submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds of tests on the comment and returns a thumbs up or thumbs down.

483 Akismet

After running the plugin for about half a day, Akismet had already catch about 400 spams. (What!).

You need to have a Wordpress.com API key to activated it. To get the API key all you need is to register over at Wordpress.com.

If you have a spam problem in your Wordpress blog, try out Akismet.
