ClockLink and web widgets

Remember those days, where you have your personal site up at Anglefire or Geocities? Where it is really cool to put as much animated gif you can get your hands on and tons of silly JavaScripts all over the place. Yes, those were the days where the more absurdly ridiculous your webpage is, the more cooler you are.

I remembered it was totally uber cool to have a real-time JavaScript clock thinggy on your page. It’s much cooler if it was an animated analog clock. Well now you could relive those days with ClockLink. If you don’t really know what is it I’m talking about, don’t worry, just ignore it.

Back to ClockLink. It’s not new, it’s not revolutionary, but it’s a crazy idea and might just be fun.

Clocklink provides fashionable clocks that you can easily embed in your web page. All you need to do is simply paste the tag on your web page. Our clock will display the city name of your choice if you choose. You can also choose a time zone for your clock so it will show the correct time. Decorate your website with our clocks!

The whole concept at first seems to be frivolous. Why do you really need a clock for your visitors on your blog or website anyway? Just incase if the clock on their computer is not working?

A second look on the whole idea and after reading Pete Cashmore’s the post on Mashable, there might be something here. It seems “Blog Widgets” or “Web Widgets” is becoming more of a trend.

BubbleShare and Slideroll l mentions a few days back lets you put your photo slide shows on your site. Those could be web widgets too I guess. I could see this being use on sites like MySpace and such.

So could there be a business model around providing web widgets? ClockLink are trying to monetize by charging advertisers for customized clocks.

Will keep an eye on this topic(web widgets) in the future.

Do you know www.relatime.com ? it is a very new site launched 2 weeks ago. Well, they are Flash clocks just as Clocklink, but with very new designs, due to a new way of displaying time. The BIG difference in the business model is that Clocklink is the imitation of real clocks, on the other hand Relatime is born on Internet BUT they can make real watches from the virtual models. Other differences are about a desktop version, the possibility for users to build their own “Relatime watch, and last but not least the actual spirit of research and discovery they want to share with people.
