Tagging or folksonomy is really a great way to organize data or information on the web. It is a non-hierarchical, collaborative way of categorizing information. Users are encouraged to assign freely chosen keywords with any vocabulary they choose. Wiki up folksonomy for more info. However, there are other uses of tagging that does not involve defining the data item.

Most common on social, online bookmarking sites would be the “read later tag. Clearly the tag serve a more personal purpose. People tag an item with “readlater so that they could come back later and read the articles or what ever they have found. By looking at del.icio.us page for “readlater tag we can see what the stuff other people going to read later. Assuming if that is what they mean by “readlater.
Blinklist has this Quick Blinks feature, which could be use similarly with what people are doing with “readlater tags on del.icio.us.
You could use online social bookmarking sites to keep track of comments you have made on websites or blogs too. Bookmark or tag or blink or whatever it is you call it, the page you have commented on. Tag it with something like “mycomment or “commentedblog or “jibonecomment (replace jibone with any name you want). This way you can come later view items you have tagged with those to keep track of what and where you have commented on the blogosphere.
Of cause you could always use a more fancy way to keep track of your comment using coComment.
Write to me if you have any fun ways of using folksonomy tagging.

I like the concept of tagging as well. I think for tagging to be really useful it needs to be in a context that you really care about or involves information that you need more of. I just launched my site which takes that idea and applies it to music. It is still pretty young, but i think over time the tag cloud could become a great tool to find new music based on what you already like. Anyways…check it out and let me know what you think. Great post. Most times tag clouds get a bumb wrap.

Pocket|Trax is an interesting idea. Letting the users/readers define the music.
I’ve found some interesting music there. I miss the old Napster days where you can truely discover new music.
I do think you should be able to tag more then just one tho.
Thanks man,
I only allow 1 tag per song because I don’t know how my little server will handle it is there happened to be a bunch of people tagging at once. It is an easy change on the back end to take that limitation off. It keeps someone from spamming me with a bunch of junk tags.
Hopefully we wil get more readership and see how the experiment will work.

oh yeah. I really dig you pictures in your header. Very well done.
We’re offering a free session to parents about Web 2.0. May I use your Web 2.0 folksonomy tags .jpg on the wiki for this session?
Many thanks,
