Testing out Chatsum

I was lucky enough to be one of Chatsum beta testers. Chatsum is a firefox extension that lets you chat with anybody on the same page or the same domain with you. It a full-fledged chatroom that sits on the sidebar in firefox (see screenshots).

When you navigate to another site or switch tabs, Chatsum will keep up with you. If you want to navigate away but do not want to leave the chatroom there is a nifty little padlock that you can click.

On a high traffic site where there are a lot of Chatsum user it is a chatroom but on a low traffic site it is a commenting system where you could leave messages. Since it’s a close beta and there are not a lot of Chatsum user so it’s not that often that i stumble on to a site where there is a conversation going on, unless you on Chatsum’s site or digg or gmail.

There is also a tab on chat sum that shows where, which site right now is having a lot of Chatsum user.

Over on the Chatsum beta tester mailing list there are a lot of other feature being discuss. Buddy list, Dashboard Widget are some of the confirm feature. One of the feature being requested is somesort of extension that sits in firefox status bar that display how many Chatsum user ore currently on the same site as you are. This is better, as you don’t have to open the Chatsum side bar all the time.

Feature for developer also have been mention. I heard something about API that you could pull Chatsum stats on to your site. For example I could display how many people are chatting on my blog and what they are chatting.

Chatsum looks promising. You got to love its tag line, “On the web, no one could hear you screem… Until now”.
