Digg.com screenshotsDigg clones are everywhere. Digg is a technology news site that centers on a voting system that lets its users decide what news makes it to the front page. You could say it’s very democratic site.

Digg is a technology news website that employs non-hierarchical editorial control. With digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allowing an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do.

The idea of a website govern by its users and not by their bias editors is revolutionary. I guess Digg.com will always be credited to it. As with everything successful, there will always others that will follow.

It starts with Meneame.net a Spanish digg-clone released its PHP code as open-source or was it Pligg.com. Whatever it is, other digg clones started to spawn else where.

It’s not a bad thing this digg clone, digg is a great concept but the site are limited to the areas of technology related. All the other so called digg clone offers digg like site for other area of interest. Linuxfilter.com is a digg like site that focus on linux news. Shoutwire.com, it offer a more broad domain of interest. Socialporn.com, well this is bound to happen, it is a porn gallery site that uses digg like concept.

Now we have our own digg like site that gathers news content from the south east asia region, Spymy. To try it out, I register and wanted to post something from my blog on to it, the only Malaysia related was about the kosmo anime is porn issue.

The whole site acts and feels like digg. If you are familiar with digg you will feel right at home. Spymy is still in it’s infancy. I do hope spymy will evolve. What I like to see is :-

  1. Better color scheme and layout design. Try not to follow digg’s web layout.
  2. Right now I have no idea to how see who has digged spy on the same story I spy on. I’m pretty sure this feature is on the pipeline.
  3. Maybe instead of having predefine categories, why not use tags ala del.licios.us. It’s messy but could cover a more broad area.
  4. Curently there is no way to un-spy stories you have spy on.

Just my 2 cents. It looks like there are more competition on my own Project Selamber. It will be ready once I could find sometime to work on it.

Hi, thanks for the comments :) Indeed I’m not a designer, so the looks take the back seat for the moment, I’m more interesting in getting everything to work decently.

You will be able to see who else Spyed the story in the future, there are plenty of extra features in the pipeline. I have a lot of experience with forums and blogs, so I know what is required.

The software is just in an early stage of development right now.

We will be using a combination of set categories, which you can also add custom tags to, you will be able to select posts by tag or by category.

As for Unspy yah, it won’t be possible, it’s like voting, once you cast your vote you’ve voted, you can’t retract it.

But there will be ways to negatively vote like broken link, lame story, duplicate, old link and so on.

If you have any other suggestions as we suggest, please let us know :)

Also don’t forget to submit stories and vote on other submissions.

A permanent link would be good too ;)

    Cheers.

    nice blog

There’s also more. We don’t just install a style and say, ahh, looks good, lets release it. We have a huge checklist of things to do with the new style (basically we have to try *every* operation you do on a normal board, replying, quoting, all the BBcode, splitting, moving, locking, admin pannel, etc).
We also have to check for things such as reference to images outside of their own directory (quite a few styles forget to make
