Meebo

edit

So your office or school’s computer lab does not allow you to install any IM software on their computers or the network admin just block every single network port except port 80, which is use for surfing. In other words the only thing you can do online is browse the web. IM is bad for “productivity” so they say.

Meet Meebo. It’s and IM client on a browser. It support AIM, ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, Jabber, GoogleTalk and MSN Messenger. It uses JavaScript, or what the “industry” calls it nowadays as AJAX so you got the window dragging and stuff going on for you. It does not need Flash at all, any modern Internet browser, FireFox for example will work just fine.

It says on the site that your passwords are encrypted and your data are not stored or archive on their server. Well i can not vow for them, but I’m pretty sure there are not a malicious company. They are just here to help you stay connected to your friends and families.

By the way, on their forum there were some thread about some school’s or office network starting to block meebo’s site. Damn.

Looks like they have improved quite alot, especially in the interface. When they first launched (at least 6 months ago), it was so buggy and laggy.

Yes,.. it’s good for those who can’t use IM is collage’s computer labs and stuff ;) Sure there are ways to get by that,.. you can do tunneling and stuff but it’s such a hassle.

I’ve use meebo a couple of time, so far so good.
