Google Keynote over at CES

Google co-founder, Larry Page gives a keynote at CES. Engadget has done a live coverage of the event. Base on the pictures and the posting it looks like one hell of an event. Here are some of the things I find intresting.

Larry Page comes onstage on the back of Stanford’s robot SUV that won DARPA’s competitions. He then demo the Google Local Mobile, it’s like Google Maps on your mobile phone. It even have satellite imagery, so you can get a birds eyes view. The service is up, Beta.

Larry also mention about the $100 laptops that they were working on with MIT. Design to be low cost, it is Linux base, 500MHz processor speed and 128MB of DRAM. 500MB of Flash memory and no Hard disk. It also has 4 USB ports. The laptop will be wireless. It also has an innovative ways of powering it, which include a wind-up thingy (me thinks it’s the yellow thing on it’s side).

The laptops however are not for sell. The Laptop will be distributed school children in developing nations.

Quote for MIT $100 laptop site:

Please note that the $100 laptops—not yet in production—will not be available for sale. The laptops will only be distributed to schools directly through large government initiatives.

Now this is what I call closing the digital divide.

Google Pack logoNext Google announce Google Pack. It is a software bundle pack, software included are :-

  • Adobe Reader 7
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal
  • GalleryPlayer HD Images
  • Google Desktop
  • Google Earth
  • Google Pack Screensaver
  • Google Picasa Photo Organizer/Editor
  • Google Talk
  • Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
  • Google Video player
  • Mozilla Firefox with Google Toolbar
  • Norton AntiVirus 2005 Special Edition

It looks like a one stop download of all the software you need on your Windows PC. Google Pack right now is Windows only. There is also Google updater to keep all you programs to the latest version.

Next Google announce that they are planing of making a video downloading services, something like what Apple is offering on it’s iTunes. A couple of major network channels have agree on putting in their content. There is not much details on this yet but be sure to keep an eye on it. It’s going to be interesting to see Google and Apple go head to head with this.

Glad to see there are a lot of fun things happening over at Google, guess Google is not all about search engine and Adsense.

Can’t wait to see what will Steve Jobs brings on to the table doring his MacWorld keynote.
