Retrievr, fun with Flickr

Retrievr logoCheck out Retrievr, saw it over at TechCrunch. It is really a fun web application. It has a Flash sketch pad, you draw something on it and it will fetch images from Flickr that are similar to what you had draw, so it says. I had played around with it, sometimes I could see the similarities but other times I just don’t get it. This is however, just an experimental services.

From the site:

One thing to keep in mind is that retrievr doesn’t do object/face/text recognition of any kind, so if you’re drawing an outline sketch of a chair, it almost certainly won’t get you one back (except your index only contains images of chairs). The same holds for corporate logos, icons &c.

It helps to think of it as matching the most pronounced shapes and slabs of colors.

I would really love to see more application like this. One day I would wish I could ‘google’ or search for something not base on what word or text I type in the input box but base on the image given. Imagine this, you have a picture of a car, but you don’t know the make or model, you then submit the image to a search engine and it will then spill out the result related to the car.

Does something like that already exist? Drop me a line if you know of any application that does that.
