I just saw a video of Gorillaz’s live performance at European MTV Music Awards. Gorillaz for those of you who is not familiar is an animated, fictional, virtual band, comprising four animated band members. In other words they are not real. The band is start of as a pet project of Damon Albarn (of Blur) and Jamis Hewlett, the creator of Tank Girl.

So how did an animated fictional band played live on the European MTV Music Awards? In the forms of holograms of cause. It truly is amazing! Some site are saying it’s nothing but smoke and tricks, Pepper’s Ghost technique. But then the Gorillaz aren’t real (in the physical sense), so I don’t think they are using Pepper’s Ghost technique. Beside Pepper’s ghost only will work if you see in it one angle, but it was a live performance there were camera panning, camera from different angles.

If they are using this plastic mirror technique, how did they make noodles walk from one end to the center of the stage? They have to had to rig the whole stage.

And also, Gorillaz is planing to hit the road for a worldwide tour. Expect them to appear on stage in their 3D holographic depicting their cartoon likenesses.
