Computer Wizardry, Esoteric Spirituality, and Mind-altering Substances
Finally I have some time to spare, just after my finals exam and right before the Raya holidays I decide to resurrect an old dust collecting Pentium III computer, that had been sitting in a conner in my room since god knows when, and had it run Linux. Open it up check the hardware, plug in the cables try booting it up and up comes Windows 98 logo. Everything seems to be working fine, although Windows took forever to load.
I bought a PCI Network card for it (what’s the use of a Linux server if it can’t be connect to the network). A 2-port KVM switch (Linksys KVM2KIT) so that I could operate both my Windows desktop and Linux Computer with just 1 keyboard, mouse and monitor. It’s really fun. Tab scroll lock twice you back to your windows computer tap scroll lock twice again and you are back to your Linux computer. Tab, tab, tab, I spend the first hour playing with that before starting my installation.
This is not my first time journeying into the realm of Linux. I’ve try Linux before in the past but not really that into it, and now are currently doing all of my work on MacOS X. I played around with redhat 5 or was it 4, it’s about that time. I’m quite familiar, but not that fluent with the UNIX environment and it’s commands. My windows machine are only been keep alive for 2 reasons, which is to test my website designs and gamming. Although not as hardcore as I used to be but I still consider myself a gamer.
This time around I decided to install a Linux distribution that I could really learn Linux and it’s inner workings. Not those “wannabie user-friendly” types of Linux distro. I’m not saying those type of Linux distro are no good, they are great at hiding all the nasty complicated stuff from someone who is new and just want to try out Linux. Those distro are not less powerful either. Well just put it like this, if I want a powerful, user-friendly UNIX like operating system, I’ll just use my Mac. There was 2 distro on my list, Debian and Gentoo. A friend of my recommended Gentoo if you want to have a linux that is highly configurable. So then gentoo it is.
